PROFESSIONAL MICE REMOVAL - LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK

Mouse is the common name typically but imprecisely applied to rodents found worldwide with bodies measuring less than five inches in length. Mouse refers to any of the thirty-eight species in the genus Mus, which is the Latin term for a mouse. The house mouse is a small mammal of the order Rodentia, native to Central Asia, which has established itself within human populations in many other areas of the world. Mice have a thin body, rounded ears, tapered snout, and are scantily-haired. These rodents have slender hind feet with hairless soles, sharp, tiny claws, and a body-length sparsely furred tail. Mice obtain detailed sensory information about their immediate surroundings via a specialized array of whiskers on their snout. They have a keen sense of smell and hearing, which assists them in locating food and avoiding predators. The diet of the house mouse varies. Outdoors, house mice consume seeds and insects, and indoors they eat nearly anything that is digestible.

Mice are nocturnal animals, although some will every now and then forage during the day. A nocturnal animal species such as the house mouse is primarily active at night-time and, therefore, is rarely seen by the homeowner. However, the scratching sounds of mice in the attic at night may awaken a sleeping Long Island resident. The most obvious indicators of an infestation are the presence of mice droppings. Most of its exploratory activity, feeding, and drinking are done during the hours of darkness. This behavior has most likely evolved as an avoidance response to predation pressure by animals that are generally active during the day. Mice are ground dwellers, although some species are also nimble climbers as well as competent swimmers. A few species of mice are specialized burrowers rarely being seen above the ground. Most mice excavate burrows in which they build nests out of dry vegetation. The rodent burrows have long entrances and are furnished with escape tunnels. Predators of mice include foxes, birds of prey, snakes, skunks, wild dogs, and cats. Despite being heavily preyed upon, mice populations remain plentiful. Due to their remarkable adaptability to almost any environment, mice are one of the most successful mammalian genera living on Earth today. Mice are prolific year-round breeders, and a female mouse can have five to ten litters per year. Mouse litters average six to eight pups, so a single female mouse can give rise to as many as eighty mice in a year.

Mice are considered vermin because they are a significant source of crop damage and disease. Mice spread the lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus and other rodent transmitted wildlife diseases and are carriers of parasites such as fleas and mites. The most significant economic loss from mice is not due to how much they consume but what must be discarded due to damage or contamination.
